Jack Bermingham received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He served as academic vice president at Highline Community College for twelve years before his appointment to his current position as interim president during fall 2006.
Dr. Bermingham is proud of the strong collaborative relationship that he helped foster between the administration and the faculty at Highline since 1994. As Interim President he is pleased with the College's progress in working across divisional lines to support student achievement. National and regional recognition of Highline’s best practices related to diversity, international education, basic skills, and the Honors Program reflects part of his commitment to serve all students effectively.
Dr. Bermingham has had a distinguished academic career. He received tenure as a faculty member and later became dean of social sciences at a private comprehensive university in the northwest. Earlier, he had a faculty appointment at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
Dr. Bermingham received the Washington Education Association’s 2001 Human and Civil Rights Award for his successful leadership on Diversity in curriculum and cultural awareness. In 2005, he received the Dr. Werner Kubsch Award for his outstanding work in International Education. Later that year, he received a similar award from the Polytechnic of Namibia for his impact on the institution’s development and the strong international partnership.
He currently serves on the boards for the Seattle Trade Development Alliance and Community Colleges for International Development as well as on the executive committee of the South King County Economic Development Initiative.

John Frederic Garmon

Dr. John Garmon grew up in a small town in Texas. After high school graduation, he served four years in the Marines during the Vietnam War. After completing his enlistment, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at West Texas A&M University.
After teaching English at community colleges for several years, he became an administrator (director of community services and dean of instruction). He earned his Ph.D. in American and British Literature at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
He served as a vice president of academic affairs at two community colleges and dean of students at two community colleges (dean of instruction and student services at Mountain Empire Community College in Virginia, and executive dean of instruction and student services at Florida Community College in Jacksonville). He was also a dean of occupational-technical education at Texas Southmost College in Brownsville.
From 2001 to 2004, he served as president of Vista Community College in Berkeley, California (now re-named Berkeley City College). He now serves as vice president of academic affairs at New Mexico State University Carlsbad (a branch campus community college). His articles, short fiction, poetry, and book reviews have been published in many American magazines.
In 2003, he was appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges Commission for Communications and Technology. His son, Dr. Christopher Garmon, is a staff economist with the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., and his daughter, Sandra Garmon, is an English teacher in the Dallas, Texas, public schools.
Dr. Garmon’s second wife, Nancy, has two grown sons who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is a freelance artist, working mostly with acrylics.

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Julie Leidig holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Syracuse University and three graduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (M.A. in Foreign Language Education, M.Ed. in Adult Education and Human Resource Development, and Ph.D. in Educational Administration/Community College Leadership). She is completing her fourth year as Vice President for Instruction at the newly renamed Lone Star College – Montgomery*, one of five colleges in the rapidly growing Lone Star College System in suburban Houston.
At the college she is responsible for all credit and non-credit instruction, workforce education, continuing education, library services, instructional support, professional development, and school partnerships. Prior to her arrival at LSCS, Dr. Leidig had a leadership role at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board in Austin for eight years, where she was in charge of academic issues for the state’s 90 community and technical college campuses. In that capacity she was instrumental in the development of the statewide transferable core curriculum and in common course databases for both transfer and workforce education.
Dr. Leidig discovered a passion for teaching in the 1980s when she spent five years teaching English in Tokyo, Japan and has centered her work around higher education and instruction ever since. After returning to the United States in 1990, she worked for the University of Texas as a staff development specialist and instructional coordinator for an innovative workplace literacy project while completing her graduate work.
Dr. Leidig is currently Board Secretary for Montgomery County Youth Services and will be a member of the 2008 graduating class of Leadership Montgomery County.
She shares a love of travel, nature, literature, and the arts with her husband, Kurt and her daughter, Ariel.
*Until January 2008, Lone Star College – Montgomery was known as Montgomery College of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District.
